How to make slime: DIY guide
There are a few different ways to make slime.
You can either use the traditional method of slime making with borax, or you can try a slime recipe without borax.
There are different types of slime you can make but fluffy slime is my personal favorite because it’s soft, airy, and just plain fun to play with.
We will show you how to make slime with both methods so that you can decide which one is right for you.
What do I need to make slime?
To make slime, you will need the following ingredients:
– Clear glue (Elmer’s slime glue is nontoxic)
– Borax (or another slime activator)
– Food coloring (optional)
– glitter (optional) I like very fine glitter for slime
– a mixing bowl
– a spoon or spatula
Making slime with borax: Step-by-step guide
First, you might be wondering what is borax?
Borax is known as a multipurpose cleaner or detergent.
It’s a white powder that dissolves in water and has a variety of uses around the house.
Now that you know what borax is, let’s get to the slime part.
Borax powder is a powerful slime activator.
When mixed with glue, it creates a slime that is stretchy and fun to play with.
To make slime with borax, follow these steps:
– Pour ¼ cup of glue into a bowl. We like to use clear glue so that the slime is nice and translucent.
– Add ½ cup of warm water to the bowl and mix until the glue is completely dissolved.
– Add a few drops of food coloring, glitter, or both if you want!
– In another bowl, mix together ¼ cup of warm water with ½ teaspoon of borax powder.
– Stir until the borax is completely dissolved.
– Pour the borax mixture into the glue mixture and stir until combined.
– The slime will start to form immediately. Continue stirring until the slime is no longer sticky.
– Once the slime has formed, you can pick it up and knead it with your hands.
– Store your slime in an airtight container when you’re not playing with it.

Making slime without borax: Step-by-step guide
Not everyone has borax powder lying around the house.
If you want to make slime without borax, you can use another slime activator such as contact lens solution or liquid starch.
We will show you how to make slime with contact lens solution.
To make slime with contact lens solution, follow these steps:
– Pour ¼ cup of glue into a bowl. Again, we like to use clear glue so that the slime is nice and translucent.
– Add ½ cup of warm water to the bowl and mix until the glue is completely dissolved.
– Add a few drops of food coloring, glitter, or both if you want!
– Pour ¼ cup of contact lens solution into the glue mixture and stir until combined.
– The slime will start to form immediately. Continue stirring until the slime is no longer sticky.
– Once the slime has formed, you can pick it up and knead it with your hands.
– Store your slime in an airtight container when you’re not playing with it.
Slime with shaving cream and liquid laundry detergent
There’s actually a third way to make slime at home.
Here’s what you need:
- 4 ounce bottle Elmer’s white school glue
- 2 tablespoons iquid laundry detergent
- 1-2 cups shaving cream
Instructions
– Pour the glue into a bowl.
– Add the laundry detergent and stir until combined.
– Add shaving cream and stir until slime forms.
– Knead the slime with your hands until it’s the perfect consistency.
– Store in an airtight container when you’re not playing with it.
This slime recipe is a little bit different because it uses shaving cream as one of the ingredients.
The slime will have a fluffy texture and it will be really fun to play with.
You can, of course, add food coloring to make it cooler.

Slime Making Tips
- The slime texture should be smooth, not sticky. If slime is too sticky, add a little more contact lens solution. If slime is too hard, add a little more glue.
- Slime making is a great activity for kids, but it’s important to supervise them while they’re using the slime activator (borax or contact lens solution). Please note that slime made with borax is not as safe for children to play with as the contact lens solution.
- Some people try to make slime but it doesn’t become as nice and moldable and this could be because the slime isn’t forming as it should.
If slime isn’t forming for you, check out these tips:
- Check that you have the correct ratio of glue to activator. We recommend using ¼ cup of glue to ½ teaspoon of borax powder or ¼ cup of glue to ¼ cup of contact lens solution.
- Make sure that you dissolve the borax or contact lens solution completely before adding it to the glue. Stir until there are no clumps left and the mixture is clear.
- Add a little more activator if the slime isn’t forming. Remember that slime will form almost immediately when the activator is added to the glue, so don’t be tempted to add too much!
Final thoughts
There’s something so satisfying about playing with slime, whether you’re an adult or a child.
It’s a great way to relieve stress and it’s also really fun.
